If you’ve requested for the free license of USB Safely Remove, then probably you have tried the new feature which is the “Return Device Back!”. After you had stopped the device, but still did not unplug it, sometimes it is quite useful to return it back into the system. For example if you remembered that you forgot to write a file to the external drive. In order to do it, you have to physically reconnect the device, however sometimes it’s quite inconvenient to do if the device is connected to the rear panel of the computer.

USB Safely Remove claims to be the first Windows program that allows you to return stopped device back and I thought that there isn’t a way to do it without using a software. Thanks to Ed for his valuable tip, we can now remount the ejected USB device with a few simple mouse clicks without reinserting (unplug and insert) the USB device.

Here’s what you need to do to have the “return device back” feature without using USB Safely Remove software.

1. Right click My Computer and select Properties (or you can simultaneously press Win+Pause/Break key). In System Properties window, go to the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button. In Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can just click the Device Manager link located at the left hand sidebar when you are at the System Properties window.

2. Click View from the menu bar and select “Devices by Connection“.

3. Find the parent USB Root Hub of the USB device that has a yellow color exclamation mark. Right click on the USB Root Hub and select Disable. Again right click on the same USB Root Hub that you’ve just disabled and this time select Enable.

Voila! The drive letter has been returned back to My Computer and the autorun or autoplay window will appear if it is enabled. Since this can be done in Windows itself, Microsoft Windows development team should consider adding a feature to easily re-enable the drive after ejecting without unplugging and reinserting. This tip has been verified to work on Windows XP, Windows Vista and even the latest Windows 7. No doubt that unplug and reinsert it way faster than this method IF the USB port is easily accessible. If not, this method would save you from bending your back and trying to reach the back of the case.

HOW TO EXTRACT AUDIO FROM VIDEO & CONVERT MEDIA FILE FORMAT

I have a few friends who work as a DJ. Some of them are music remixers and some are working in clubs mixing live music. One of them which is pretty new to this business called me yesterday asking me if I know how to extract audio from a movie. DJs often need to use a small part or a short phrase from a movie to embed it into their remix or simply to scratching purposes. One common example that a DJ normally scratch is from a simple “Oh yeah” and the DJ can make it sound like “oh, ohhh ye-ye-yeahhhhhhh”. There are many more examples and it depends on the DJs creativity to make it sound better and more catchy.

I’ve never really done any research on which is the best audio or video convertor which can extract audio from a video file. If you do a search in Google, you’ll definitely find a lot of “convertor” software and most of them are shareware that cost money. I know about this because most of the spam in forum is about audio convertor software.

Look no further because here are 2 free media convertors which I’ve been using all along and it supports a lot of audio and video formats.

My first choice is Format Factory.

To extract audio from a video, simply load the video file and then select “All to MP3″. My second choice is xrecode II.

It is converter and audio-grabber which allows you to convert many audio formats but it cannot convert video formats. Other than that, xrecode II supports parallel conversion by utilizing power of multi-core CPUs, normalizing audio files so that every mp3 plays at the same volume, able to combine multiple files into one large audio file, extracting audio from flv, avi, mov etc. video files (multiple audio streams are supported). Although it is a shareware that cost $15, it is fully functional with only a nag screen being displayed on startup.

MAKE WINDOWS 7 AND VISTA 32 BIT(x86) support more than 4GB memory

If you didn’t know, there are 2 editions of Windows starting from XP which is the 32-bit and 64-bit. Sometimes a Windows 32-bit is referred as x86 and 64-bit as x64. I won’t go into details on what are the differences between x86 and x64 but one of the major differences is a 64-bit Windows can support more 4GB of ram. If your computer has 4GB of ram and you’re using a 32-bit of Windows, you’ll notice that only about 3.5GB is being recognized and the remaining 500MB of memory is gone. Weirdly Windows 2003 and 2008 can already address more than 4 GB of memory so why can’t we do that with Vista? The answer is: Microsoft doesn’t want that and it is all just a licensing matter.

We can of course go for 64-bit of Windows but honestly, there are still quite a lot of software which cannot run on x64, such as the recent Mamutu and Online Armor. Free licenses are given out to EVERYONE but unfortunately you can’t even get to try it because of your Windows 64-bit. Not only that, Windows 64-bit doesn’t accept unsigned drivers unless you disable driver signature enforcement manually every time you boot. How frustrating… Well here is a good news for Windows 7 and Vista users because I found patches to make your 32-bit Windows support more than 4GB of memory.

Before you download the memory limit patchers, please be informed that some antivirus detects it as a hacktool or backdoor. I’ve analyzed the files using ThreatExpert and they are absolutely safe.

Thanks to Remko, he has provided us with a dUP2 file for the patch according to Geoff Chappell’s article about Vista’s Memory Limit. You’ll need to compile the dUP2 file with diablo2oo2’s Universal Patcher to get the executable file. If you don’t know how to do it, I’ve compiled the dUP2 file provided by Remko and you can download from this link. Remko confirms that the patch works on both Windows Vista x86 Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2. You can either drop this file in Windows\System32\ folder and run it to patch the ntoskrnl.exe file or run it from anywhere and browse for the file.

As for Windows 7, you will need a different patcher and this time it’s from a Russian group called Staforce. Their group also came up with crack/activator for Windows 7. This patch works on Windows 7 (x86) Build 7600 RTM. The official link to download the 4GB memory limit patch is at this link but you’ll need to register for an account to see the download link. If you don’t want to register, I’ve uploaded the patcher here for your convenience. Other than patching Windows 7’s kernel to support more than 4GB memory, the installer also comes with a watermark remover. You can press the N key from your keyboard to disable the watermark remover.

To be honest, I did not get to test either of the patch above because both my desktop and laptop has only 2GB of memory. As for Windows XP to support more than 4GB of ram, I wasn’t able to find any patch for it. If you know any please leave a comment.

JDownloader is an open source, platform independent and written completely in Java free tool that automates downloading from one click file hosters such as Rapidshare, Megaupload and etc. If you have premium accounts, you can configure JDownloader to use it. Well this only works if you get dynamic IP address and not static ones. Today I launched JDownloader and I got a notice that there is a major update. I updated it and noticed that the whole program’s GUI has changed to a much faster, nicer and easier to use interface.

I have to admit that the old interface is a little confusing and not so user friendly. The new layout tab helps a lot in making this program looks more tidy.

I was also very excited to learn that the new FlashGot now supports JDownloader! I have FlashGot installed on my Firefox browser and every time when I wanted to download files from RapidShare, I had to manually run JDownloader and let the clipboard monitor catch the links. But with FlashGot integration, I can just right click on the link and select “FlashGot Link” or “FlashGot Selection” if it is a text.

I wasn’t able to get FlashGot working with JDownloader at first. No matter what I did, JDownloader is always grayed out from the list of supported download managers. Then I downloaded the full version from JDownloader’s website, extract and ran it, this time I get a confirmation window asking me to install Firefox integration. I am very sure that didn’t come out when I upgraded from 0.6 to 0.7. After clicking OK, you can now select JDownloader from the Download Manager list.

I noticed that JDownloader is being developed very actively if compared to other downloaders such as CryptLoad. They’ve been talking about their version 2.0 for a long time but still nothing after so many months. JDownloader is FREE and it requires Java Runtime Environment to run. Supports Windows, Linux and Mac. Try it, I am sure you’ll love it.

iWithout a doubt that The Unlocker is the best and its one of my must-install software after I’ve finished installing Windows. If the unlocker software cannot support this feature, then it’s pretty useless to me. Thankfully LockHunter supports this.

EASY INSTALL FRAME WORK.NET

I don’t really like re-installing Windows because it’s boring and takes a long time to get everything back to normal. Installing Windows takes about 30 minutes, then looking for correct drivers takes another 30 minutes, downloading and installing latest third party software should take an hour and finally restoring emails and settings takes another 30 minutes. This is if everything goes smoothly without problems. There were a few times I ended up discovering even more problems during Windows reinstallation and had to get them fixed too.

Last weekend I went to a friend’s house to fix his HP desktop computer and needed to reinstall Windows because it was badly corrupted. Fortunately branded computers such as HP has recovery disc where I can just pop in the disc and the installation is all automated. I don’t even need to worry about looking for the correct drivers because the recovery disc has all that.

When the whole Windows restoration process has completed, there’s something else that we should install before the third party software and that is .NET Framework, Java, DirectX, Flash player, Silverlight, Shockwave player, and Visual C++ Runtimes.

These addons are important so that the user can able to run .NET Framework application, run Java applets, view websites with flash or shockwave and also better gaming performance with the latest DirectX. However, downloading and installing every version of .NET Framework, hotfixes and all the addons above would take you a lot of time.

Here’s an all in one package called All in One Runtimes which contains all versions of .NET Framework with their hotfixes, latest DirectX 9.0c, Adobe Flash Player 10, Microsoft Silverlight 3.0, Shockwave Player 11.5.0.596, Java Runtime Environment 6 and Visual C++ Runtimes. The good thing about this AiO pack is it can automate the process of installing all the addons without you doing anything.

Sorry 64-bit Windows users, Mamutu runs only on 32-bit of Windows XP, 2003/2008 Server and Vista. There are 2 processes for Mamutu which is a2service.exe taking up 9.692MB and mamutu.exe taking up 20.688MB. This is the first time I got to test Mamutu and honestly I was a little disappointed with the results.

Mamutu claims to detect injection of code into other programs, invisible installations of software and creation of Autostart entries BUT it didn’t warn me when I tried infecting my test computer with a trojan. The trojan that I used for testing has all 3 behaviors above but no idea why it did not block or warn me about it. I’ve also tried running a very destructive virus called Almanahe/JambanMu, it managed to detect “Invisible installations of software” and pops up the same warning over and over again for a few times even though I select “Block behavior”. When the warning popups has stopped, I was shocked to find that the computer has been successfully infected by the virus because task manager, regedit, cmd has been disabled and the computer was running very slowly. As for Brontok virus, it managed to block all suspicious behavior. In my opinion, I personally think that ThreatFire works better than Mamutu.

Disable program progam has stopped working error dialog in windows server 2008

One of the most important thing when hosting a game server such as Counter-Strike Source is to make sure that the server is able to automatically restart itself when it crashes. It is perfectly normal for a CSS server to experience crashes when it is running a system-intensive mod such as ZombieMod and like all software they might not be free of bugs.

If you are hosting your game server on a linux or unix server, then you do not need to worry about auto restarting when crash because by default it can already do that via a script file. However for Windows, it cannot auto restart. If you check the srcds.com windows server tutorial, there is a part where it teaches you to create a batch file that monitors the srcds.exe process and if it is terminated, the batch file will run the specified command line to restart the CSS server.

Sorry to say that the batch file will not work because by default Windows shows an error window when it crashes. It will require someone to click on the “Close the program” button in order to restart via batch file. Here is how to disable the ErrorMode window so that you can use the batch file to auto restart CSS server when it crashes.

When the game crashes, the srcds.exe process is still running in background because of the error popup that says “srcds.exe has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.”.

If you disable Error Reporting, you will still get a similar error window that says “srcds.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program”.

To disable Error Reporting in Windows 2008 Server, just run the command below.

serverWerOptin /disable

I found another guide from MSDN on how the user can suppress system and application error messages from occurring on an embedded system. The registry location is at the following, by default the value data is 0 and we should change it to 2 to set all messages to invisible.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Windows\ErrorMode.

Weirdly even after doing all that, it’s still not enough to disable the error window when the game server crashes. So I continue digging and I found that there’s another important registry key which you need to modify in order to totally suppress the “.exe has stopped working” dialog.” Go to the following registry location and change the value data to 1.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\DontShowUI

Now you can run the batch file to monitor the srcds.exe process and it will auto restart when it crashes. I just can’t understand why there are no complete tutorials for running a CSS server. The information had to be scattered around and the server admin had to spend hours looking it up. By the way, there is a free software called ServerChecker which is able to restart your game server if it has crashed. It actually can automatically configure the registry to disable Windows Error Reporting and ErrorMode but it doesn’t support Windows 2008 Server.

Easiest way to recover XP and VISTA product key from unbootable windows

As a computer tech guy, two things that I find very important is the speed of solving a computer problem and also convenience. I don’t want to be wasting the whole day trying to solve one problem and the customer sees me as unprofessional. Convenience in a way I don’t want to tire myself in opening up dirty and dusty computer case, swapping hard drives and etc.

Very frequently I had to reinstall Windows for people. One very common annoying problem that I always face is the user lost his license sticker and I had to spend more time in retrieving the genuine Windows product key. There are a few ways to do it and most of them involves me having access to another working computer. For example, taking out the hard drive and fix it to a working machine, load the registry and retrieve the product key. Or I can boot up PCRegedit, load the registry and then decrypt the key from a working computer. All those steps are very time consuming and troublesome.

I tried very hard to look for a linux live CD that can retrieve the license key but I couldn’t find one. But here’s my opinion on the simplest and most convenient way to retrieve XP or Vista product key from an unbootable machine.

All I need to do is set up a UBCD4Win livecd, boot up the computer with it and run either Joshua’s Key Reader or Keyfinder. Setting up UBCD4Win could take a while, so here’s a guide on how to create your UBCD4Win livecd.

1. Download UBCD4Win (250+MB) and install it on your computer.

2. Run UBCD4Win.

3. You need to select the source at UBCD4Win. Insert Windows XP installation disc and select your CD drive. If you don’t have Windows XP installation disc but your manufacturer provides a i386 folder in your C drive, then select C:\i386

4. Insert a blank CD, select Burn to CD/DVD and click Build. The whole process should take a while so go have a coffee.

Now to recover Windows product key, all you need to do is boot up the unbootable computer with UBCD4Win. Follow the instructions until you get to a part where it looks like Windows. Go to Start > Programs > System Information > Info. and Diag. Tools > You can either use Joshua’s Key Reader or Keyfinder

A. If you run Keyfinder, go to Tools > Load Hive… and select the Windows folder which is normally at C:\Windows and the genuine Windows Key will be display at the right pane.

B. If you run Joshua’s Key Reader, click the Read Remote Key button. Same thing as above, select Windows folder which is normally at C:\Windows. The Windows Product Key will be shown.

This method confirm to work on Windows XP and Vista 32-bit because I’ve tested it. See, all it took is one CD to do the job. Don’t need to have access on another working computer to decrypt the ProductID, or the hassle of taking out the hard drive and fixing on another computer. I noticed something weird on my Acer laptop running Windows Vista. The product key that is retrieved from the registry hive is different from the license sticker at the bottom of the laptop and I am very sure that the Vista is installed from the recovery partition. Anybody knows anything about this?

How many file hosting websites do you know? RapidShare, Megaupload, Hotfile, zshare, mediafire, netload? 90% of the time I only search for files that is hosted in RapidShare and the remaining 10% goes to Megaupload. Did you know that there are actually about 200 of them? I believe the list will continue to grow when a lot of people are seeing how RapidShare turned into the most popular file hosting in the world and obviously they make tons of money from their premium system.

Last week I compiled a comprehensive list of file spreading websites which is able to upload your files to multiple file hosting websites. You upload one time and get 5 or more links. Hopefully the developer of FileUploader will fix this in future versions. Good news is there is a new uploading engine coming soon which offers much more functions, less bugs and are cross-platform (can run on Linux, MacOS …). Could take a few weeks or even months to remake a new uploader.

Key for 2003 and 2007 microsoft office xp

I just got a new project to setup 2 computer labs. All they wanted me to do was configure the user accounts, make sure that all the computers can connect to the network and install a licensed copy of Microsoft Office on every PC. The job is very simple but time consuming because I had to go to every PC and install one by one. Another thing which I don’t like doing is to type in the 25 alphanumeric product key on every computer that needs Microsoft Office installed. It is slightly easier for me if I create a text file which contains the product key for me to copy and paste but the Office installer somehow jumps back to the first product key box whenever I bring another window on top of it.

I remembered many many years ago my friend borrowed me an Office 2000 installer which doesn’t require me to enter any product key. It totally skips the part where you have to enter the product key. So I thought maybe there’s a way to install Microsoft Office without supplying the CD key or if not, at least it can auto enter for me. Glad that Microsoft made it possible for network administrator’s convenience.

First you will need to copy all the files in the Office installer disc to your hard drive. Then edit the setup.ini file which is at Files\Setup folder and create a new value PIDKEY=YOURPRODUCTKEYHERE at Options. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it. The below guide is for Microsoft Office 2003.

1. Copy all the files from your Microsoft Office CD.

2. Go to \Files\Setup, right click on the Setup.ini file, select Properties and uncheck Read-only.

3. Open Setup.ini, locate [Options] and right at the bottom of the options, type PIDKEY=ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXY. Replace the ABCDE… with your genuine Office product key.

4. Save the setup.ini file and burn all the files to a new disc if you need to.

Now when you run Microsoft Office setup, you will still see the dialog window where it asks you to enter the product key but it has been magically auto inserted for you. No more memorizing the CD key, or any precious time typing it.

For Office XP, you won’t find the setup.ini file but instead, you should modify the setupstd.ini file. It’s also in Files\Setup folder.

For Office 2007, the file that you need to modify is different and the file structure is also not the same as Office XP or 2003. Look for a folder called Enterprise.WW or Standard.WW or Pro.WW in the Office 2007 installer. Edit the config.xml file, remove the comment out code for PIDKEY and enter the 25 digit Office 2007 CD Key WITHOUT dashes.

You can now install Office without entering any product key. A simple trick to make our tech life easier.

CREATE A SELF BURNER PACKAGE FOR ISO FILES

To a person that is familiar with computers, they definitely know what is an ISO file and how do we burn it to a disc. An ISO image is an archive file of a disc. Just think it as a ZIP file for a CD where all the contents in a disc is being packed into one file BUT without compression. When you backup a disc, it is normally being backed up as an ISO image file. This is a standard that has been defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Manually copying all files from a disc to your hard drive and zipping it up to a single file has slight difference compared to backing up as ISO. Other than backing up the data of the files on a disc, an ISO image also backs up all the file system metadata, including boot code, structures, and attributes. Burning ISO images to a disc is another problem to some people because it is not the same as the usual steps like when you burn data. Instead of dragging the ISO file to burn to a disc, you should open it with your burning software and then burn.

If you had to deal with people who doesn’t know how to burn an ISO image file, here is an idea to make things easier for them instead of guiding them over the phone.

NERO 9 down load free

I have to be honest that my favorite CD burning software is Nero 6. I got to know about it when I bought my first CD burner and it come with an OEM version of Nero. Then at every major update, Nero kept on adding new features and eventually it got so bloated that the size of the installer for Nero 9 is nearly a whooping 400MB! Well I am currently using Nero 9 because I have an original license and didn’t want it to go to waste. Of course I didn’t go ahead with the full installation as I selected Custom install and only install the necessary components that I need.

Nero has always been a shareware meaning it cost money if you want to use it (leave the keygen and crack out of this). For those that cannot afford Nero and not into piracy, there are several free disc burning software such as ImgBurn, BurnAware, CDBurnerXP and DeepBurner which works well too. Good news is if you want to use Nero to burn your disc and you don’t have the money, you can still use Nero because they’ve started to offer Nero 9 free version.

The free version of Nero 9 is called Nero StartSmart Essentials. It was originally bundled with hardware such as a PC or burner and cannot be purchased separately. The features included are specifically chosen by the hardware manufacturer to assist the user in better experiencing and enjoying their hardware product. Now Nero has put it for everyone to download. The size of the installer for Nero 9 free version is only 55MB compared to the full version which is nearly 400MB. Obviously a big part of Nero 9 full version has been stripped off.

From the Nero 9 free version description, it says that it contains simply data burning and disc copying features for CDs and DVDs. Additional features and functionality are available with an upgrade to Nero 9 full version. I’ve downloaded and tested it, you can only burn data, copy disc, erase and analyze disc from Nero 9 Free. That’s it! I cannot rip audios to MP3, cannot burn MP3 to audio CD and etc.

Honestly I can’t see why is there any reason to use the new free Nero 9 StartSmart Essentials because it really lacks of basic features which can be found in other disc burning software that are free. Unless like I said earlier, you’re a big fan of Nero and that’s the only burning software you’d use. During Nero 9 Free installation process, you’ll be prompted to install Ask Toolbar so make sure you are aware of it and don’t blindly click Next.

Protect your USB flash drive

In my opinion, one of the best invention in computer world is the USB flash drive. It’s so small and light which makes it convenient to carry along whenever I go. Way better than floppy disk because the data doesn’t get corrupted easily. Definitely better than CD/DVD because you don’t need a burner to write the data to the disc. Finally, I’d say that the transfer rate is acceptably fast. Moreover, a USB flash drives doesn’t cost much nowadays unless you go for those with really big storage or extra features such as U3. Practically everyone can afford it…

USB flash drives are great BUT it doesn’t come with any security at all. First of all is the write protect which I think it should be made as a standard like floppy disk and memory cards. Without a write protect switch, a computer virus can infect the drive and eventually infect the computer or can manipulate the data that’s in the drive. Next is the encryption. USB flash drives are small and can be easily misplaced or stolen. We can play safe by not letting other people get our data in a pendrive by encrypting the drive.

There’s TrueCrypt, one of the best encryption but I find it a little confusing for a basic computer user to configure. Rohos Mini Drive is another free software that creates a hidden partition on your flash drive but there is limitation to the partition space unless you upgrade. Do take a look at USB Flash Security which I will be reviewing today.

USB Flash Security is a security software that protects data in a USB flash drive by a password. Unlike Rohos Mini Drive, it creates a partition from a rdisk.rdi file when you enter the correct password. If the USB drive is formatted or the rdisk.rdi file is deleted, all your data is gone even though it’s encrypted. But USB Flash Security offers something way better which is it encrypts the whole drive, leaving only a small space to for the unlocker file to sit in. If someone formats the drive, your encrypted space and data is still intact and only the unlocker file gets deleted which can be easily restored from the program on your computer.

Here’s a short walk-through on how easy it is to use USB Flash Security. After installation and run the shortcut, here’s what USB Flash Security looks like. It will automatically detect your flash drive when you insert one. All you need to do is click the Install button.

Then you will be prompted to enter a password and the optional hint to remind you of your password if you forget.

After encrypting your USB flash drive, you can only find 2 files (autorun.inf and UsbEnter.exe) in your drive. Run UsbEnter.exe, enter your password and within a few quick seconds you’ll have access to the encrypted space for you to save, edit or delete files.

When you’re done, simply unplug or eject your flash drive and it will be automatically locked. If you check the encrypted USB flash drive space, it’s only 476KB on my 2GB drive.

That explains why even after formatting the drive the encrypted data is untouched as it only formats the 476KB removing the unlocker and autorun file. While playing around with this tool, I found a bug which is able to bypass the encryption by simply changing the drive letter. However doing that will make you loose all your files on your encrypted space. Hopefully the author of USB Flash Security knows about this bug and fix it.

There are 5 versions available for USB Flash Security and one of it is the free version which allows you to use on a USB flash memory smaller than 4GB. Of course the paid versions offers more feature than the free version.

solving audio video streaming

windows xp 7..........If your computer is experiencing drop outs when you are listening to an audio or watching a real time video steaming, sometimes it can be caused by a kernel-mode device driver in your Windows system is implemented improperly. Few days ago ha14 posted an interesting tool called DPC Latency Checker in forum. The DPC Latency Checker is a Windows tool that analyzes the capabilities of a computer system to handle real-time data streams properly. It may help to find the cause for interruptions in real-time audio and video streams, also known as drop-outs.

According to THESYCON the creator of DPC Latency Checker, Windows is not a real-time operating system and processing of streaming data in real-time is a very challenging task for Windows based applications and device drivers. There is no guarantee that certain (periodic) actions can be executed in a timely manner. When I first downloaded DPC Latency Checker, I had no idea how to use it because there are nothing except a moving graph showing my computer’s current latency. Actually it’s pretty simple to use and diagnose your computer’s latency with this tool.

This is what I see when I run DPC Latency Checker on my computer. Most of the time the current latency is pretty low and stays below 500 µs. There are a few spikes here and there but it goes just slightly above 1000 µs.

However if you see occurrence of excessive DPC latency is indicated by a red bar like the image below, it means that your computer has drop-out problems.

To find out which driver is the culprit that causes the excessive DPC latencies, you can try disabling individual devices using Windows Device Manager. Go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager. In Device Manager, disable individual devices, one at a time. To disable a device, right-click on the corresponding item (e.g. on the Ethernet adapter) and choose Disable from the context menu. Windows marks a disabled device with a read cross. After you disabled a single device, carefully watch DPC Latency Checker. When excessive latency values disappear you found the responsible device driver. If there are still exceptional large DPC latencies try the next device.

When you have identified the device driver which is responsible for the drop-outs consult the device vendor’s Web site or customer support to find an update for this driver. If this is not possible you may decide to keep the concerned device disabled while you are using streaming applications.

There are a lot of hardware devices listed in your Device Manager. You should not disable devices that are essential for your computer to function such as keyboard, mouse, IDE/SATA controller, display adapter or any device listed in Device Manager under System devices or Computer. In many cases DPC latency problems are caused by specific types of devices. So you should try the device types listed below first.

Few months back I was having problems using the Show My Webcam option from Windows Live Messenger 2009 on my laptop running Windows Vista. After spending a lot of time testing, I found a temporary workaround to enable the grayed out or broken camera icon by just signing out and then signing in back. This workaround is not really a real solution because I had to do that all the time whenever I wanted to use the Show My Webcam option. It is a bug on Windows Live Messenger 2009 and surprisingly there isn’t any updates to fix the problem even after months has passed since messenger 2009 was released.

Today I was checking out Jonathan Kay’s blog and he too written a similar article but with another solution. I gave it a try and the solution permanently enabled Windows Live Messenger 2009 Show My Webcam option! By saying permanently meaning that after restarting my computer, the Show My Webcam option is no longer grayed out and I no longer need to repeat the workaround whenever I wanted to enable show my webcam.

The solution that was posted in Jonathan’s website is to disable the webcam from “Audio and video setup” and then re-enabling it back. To do that, press Alt + T to bring up the Tools menu bar, then select Audio and video setup…. Click the Next button when you’re at the audio setup to go to the webcam setup. Click on the drop down menu from the webcam selection and select Disable. Click Finish.

Now do the exact same thing as above but this time instead of selecting disable, select your default webcam that you want to use. Now try signing on to your Messenger and check if the Show My Webcam feature is available to use or not (by right it should). Also do try restarting your computer to check if your Messenger 2009 show my webcam is enabled or not without going through the workaround steps above.

If we want to know whether a file contains virus or not is by downloading the file to our computer first and then let the antivirus that is installed on our computer do the job. Or another method is to also download the suspicious file to our computer and then upload it to Virustotal or independant antivirus website for scanning. I get a little upset yesterday when I wanted to send a link that contains photos taken during my wedding to a friend in an archive (.zip) file. The first thing that she asked was is that a virus? Are you sending something awful to me? Even after I said that it’s my wedding photo, she still didn’t dare to download because her computer friend told her not to simply download stuff from the Internet…

I don’t know what kind of computer friend she had but am sure he/she is a newbie that is just too afraid too download anything over the Internet even from a trusted friend. If one antivirus doesn’t give her any confidence, then maybe over 40 antivirus in VirusTotal scanning that one file should do it. However that requires her to download the file to her computer first. To solve this problem, here’s a way to scan files with 22 antivirus engines without first downloading it to your computer.

NoVirusThanks, a website that offers free service to analyze your file with 22 AntiVirus Engines and will report back the analysis result has now included a new feature to scan web address. Last year I’ve written about NoVirusThanks but back then it didn’t have such feature.

The new “Scan Web Address” option allow users to scan a file before they download it in their own computer. You can scan, for example, the file located in www.site.com/file.exe before download it in your computer. It can also be used to scan a single web page .html/.php/.js with all the Antivirus engines. Sometimes when a direct download link to a file is being hidden, Scan Web Address can also handle the redirection or any changes in the filename. Other than that, the online scanning feature by NoVirusThanks has been recently optimized for stability and with improved binder detector.

Let me walk you through it on how to scan a file without downloading it to your computer using NoVirusThanks.

1. Find the link that you want to scan. Let’s take DPC Latency Checker for an example. Visit the official DPC Latency Checker download page.

2. Right click on the link that lets you download the file and select Copy Link Location.

3. Now go to NoVirusThanks and click Scan Web Address tab.

4. Right click on the box just below the text that says “Web Address to Scan”, select Paste and finally click the Submit Address button.

5. Wait for about a minute and you will have your report on how many antivirus detected the file as infected.

The advantage of this feature allows you to save your time and bandwidth if you are on a limited plan from your ISP. Other than that, people with fear from downloading files over the Internet can now feel safer to download. I believe the maximum file size limit to scan is 20MB. I tried scanning Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 v9.0.0.463 installer file (kav9.0.0.463en.exe) but got the error “Could not fetch the requested address: Failed writing body”.

Ever since Windows 7 was officially released, many antivirus company such as Kaspersky, Panda, ZoneAlarm, IObit, F-Secure and a-squared was fighting to give out free license subscription for a limited time because they know that Windows 7 is such a huge success and many users would be on the look out to find an antivirus that can run on Windows 7. Yesterday I got to know about another promotion for ESET NOD32 v4 by PCGamesHardware which gives a free 6 months subscription from ivan_baroveca in forum. If you don’t know what is ESET NOD32, it is an antivirus software package made by the Slovak company ESET and is commonly known as NOD32. If you check out this comphttp://www.eset.com/products/comparison/arison page, it shows that ESET wins in terms of detection, performance and awards when compared to Norton, F-Secure, Kaspersky, McAfee and AVG.

All PCGamesHardware provided was a ZIP file to download which contains a cfg.xml file. As far as I know, ESET products are activated based on username and password. Every subscriber has their own unique username and password that can be used to download the installers and also to obtain the latest ESET virus definition. So I opened the XML file with notepad, took a quick look and found the username in clear text but the password is encrypted. Normally NOD32 username would start with EAV- followed by 8 random numbers and Smart Security with ESS-.

At first I didn’t know what to do with the XML file but after a while I found out that ESET supports importing and exporting settings via XML file. Just follow the few simple steps on how to get your free 6 months ESET NOD32 license.

If this is you don’t have ESET NOD32 installed on your computer:
1. Dowhttp://download.pcgameshardware.de/asset/binaries/cfg.zipnload NOD32 v4 cfg.xml file provided by PCGamesHardware and extract.

2. Downhttp://download.eset.com/eval/win/eav/eav_nt32_enu.msiload the latest version of ESET NOD32 v4 trial. For 64-bit users, you can get it from here.

3. Install and follow the on screen instructions.

4. At the bottom left area where it says Display: Standard mode, click on the Change… link and click Yes button.

5. Click on Setup at the left pane and then click Import and export settings.

6. Make sure that “Import settings” is selected and click on the … button to browse for the cfg.xml file.

7. Restart your computer and update virus signature database. NOD32 will download around 21MB to upgrade from trial to licensed version. If ESET fails to upgrade, try updating again. I had to update twice in order to get it right.

If you already have ESET NOD32 installed on your computer, you will only need to download the cfg.xml file and import it at Advanced mode. I tried using Nirsoft’s Asterhttp://www.nirsoft.net/utils/astlog.htmlisk Logger to reveal the asterisk behind the NOD32 password but it doesn’t work. However when I tried using Passwohttp://www.itsamples.com/downloads/password-viewer.ziprd Viewer which also does the same thing as Asterisk Logger, it worked perfectly by showing the hidden password!

Looks like ESET has blocked Nirsoft’s Asterisk Logger but not Password Viewer. I could just provide the ESET NOD32 username and password that I’ve decrypted from the cfg.xml file here but I don’t think it’s appropriate because I believe the license can get blacklisted very quickly. This license valid until 4/21/2010 which is less than 6 months because the promotion started on October.

WRocK Online (formerly under the call sign and frequency DWRK at 96.3 MHz, a frequency now used by 96.3 Easy Rock) is a former Metro Manila FM radio station and is a current Internet radio station owned by ACWS-United Broadcasting Network (also operating under the trade name WRocK Entertainment) in the Philippines. The main format of the station is lite rock music.

History
ACWS - United Broadcasting Network, Inc. established the Metro Manila radio station DWRK, more popularly called 96.3 WRocK, on the FM band, and has been on the air with the lite rock format since 1988. It used to be known as RK 96 Real Radio.

On October 6, 2008, it has been announced that the Elizalde Group of Companies' Manila Broadcasting Company has purchased DWRK from the Hodreal family, owners of ACWS-UBN, for PhP229.6 million. Except for the acquisition price, further terms were not disclosed. [1]

While the Manila radio station is under the control of Cebu Broadcasting Company, ACWS-UBN retains control of WRocK Davao and WRocK Bacolod, with WRocK Online's Lite Rock Favorites of the Week simulcast into Davao and Bacolod.

Rebirth

On October 2008, ACWS-UBN decided to re-establish the WRocK format online through the hayag.com online stream. Programs through the stream are simulcast through the WRocK provincial stations.

Listeners can now hear WRocK through webstreaming powered by Hayag, or through the WRocK Online website (requires Microsoft Silverlight).

DZMM Radyo Patrol Sais-Trenta (630 kHz Metro Manila) is the flagship AM station of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation in the Philippines. The station’s studio is located at the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Quezon City, while its transmitter is located at Obando, Bulacan. The station manager is Angelo Palmones and the station operates 24 hours a day.
At present, DZMM is considered as one of the top stations in the AM band in Metro Manila and is recognized as one of the most awarded radio stations in the Philippines.
DZMM is also simulcast via The Filipino Channel and also has a television channel on SkyCable named DZMM TeleRadyo where the studio and hosts of its programs can be seen by its listeners and viewers.
The fall of the Marcos Regime brought about the return of ABS-CBN. In July 1986, then newly-formed Presidential Commission on Good Government turned two radio stations, DZWW and DZRR, back to ABS-CBN. DZWW was renamed DZMM and resumes broadcasting. Lito Balquierda Jr., Vice-President for Radio, spearheaded the return of the giant network to the local broadcasting scene.
The network started recruiting both experienced and new employees. Their studios were initially located at Chronicle Building in Pasig (Where Benpress Corporation is currently located). After days of careful planning, DZMM was born, carrying the tagline “Ang Himpilan ng Malayang Mamamayan” (Station of the free citizen) on July 22, 1986.
Dely Magpayo was the first ever anchor to grace the airwaves of the station with her program Dear Tiya Dely, followed by other broadcast icons like Jun Ricafrente, Rene Jose, and Noli de Castro, as well as late greats Ernie Baron and Kuya Cesar.
Also, Knowledge Power, the first ever full-length program of the station was launched. It was also the country’s first-ever scholastic program on AM radio.
As it was in the past, DZMM held on the tradition of the stalwart ABS-CBN Radyo Patrol (field reporters) of the ’60s and early ’70s to further develop the station’s capabilities in serving the public. Mr. Jun Ricafrente, one of the original members of the team, started training new recruits. The first to be hired were Claude Vitug, Emil Recometa, Lito Villarosa and Neil Ocampo.
In October 1986, the station was transferred to its current studios in the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Quezon City.
In 1987, the first ever tandem on local AM radio was introduced. Mel Tiangco and Jay Sonza were the host of Mel & Jay and immediately became a hit to the listeners and lasted for couple of years. It was also in the same year when DZMM build a remarkable roster of radio talents, including Ted Failon, Korina Sanchez, Frankie Evangelista and Neil Ocampo.
It was also in this year when military insurgents took over the station. However, this did not stop DZMM from delivering news to the public, the booth was moved to then undisclosed location and immediately resumed broadcasting.
Ted Failon joined DZMM’s roster of broadcasters in 1990 and had a program with the station entitled Gising Pilipinas.
In 1991, Aksyon Ngayon, the first ever program on AM radio devoted solely to public service was created. First anchored by Korina Sanchez and Ted Failon, Aksyon Ngayon immediately soared to the top of the ratings list. Because of the thousands of less-fortunate Kapamilyas flocking the station asking help from Aksyon Ngayon, the executives decided to create the DZMM Public Service Center, the first ever separate office exclusively created for public service by a local AM station. Currently, Aksyon Ngayon is being anchored by Mayor Alfredo Lim and Kaye Dacer.
On November 5, 1993, DZMM launched Pulis, Pulis Kung Umaksiyon, Mabilis. The program was first anchored by broadcast icons, Kabayan Noli de Castro, Jay Sonza, and Mel Tiangco. It was created to keep the public informed on the activities of the Philippine National Police. It also became a venue for comments and grievances of the listening public on issues concerning the law enforcers.
In 1995, DZMM won the KBP Golden Dove awards for the Best AM Radio Station. It was also on the same year when DZMM produced the award-winning Radio Documentary, Ang Kasaysayan ng Radyo sa Pilipinas – the first ever radio special that won three major awards from three celebrated award-giving bodies. The documentary was conferred with the Lorenzo Ruiz award by the CMMA, Best Radio Program Promoting the Culture and the Arts by KBP, and Best Radio Program by the Golden Pearl Award.
DZMM once again was declared Best AM Radio Station by the KBP Golden Dove Awards in 1996. In November 5, Jeep ni Erap was formally launched on DZMM. The then vice-president Joseph Estrada himself anchored the program that tackled issues concerning the masses.
Also, in 1996, DZMM became the first local AM station to be made available in the World Wide Web with its inclusion in the ABS-CBN website. All programs of the stations are broadcast live and can be enjoyed by all Filipinos around the world via The Filipino Channel (TFC).
In 1998, from Himpilan ng Malayang Mamamayan, DZMM, under the leadership of then Vice-President for Radio Network Division Kabayan Noli de Castro, was re-launched as DZMM Radyo Patrol 630 with a much stronger and bolder battle cry, “Una sa Balita, Una sa Public Service”.
DZMM ranked first among all AM radio stations in 1998. For the fourth year in a row, it won the KBP Golden Dove Award for Best AM Radio Station. In its continuing effort to help our less-fortunate Kapamilyas, DZMM staged the first ever OPLAN MM or Malusog at Malakas na Mamamayan. This event was first held at Sta. Cruz, Manila where 1500 residents were given medical and dental care. In June 11, DZMM aired its centennial special titled, Ang Media at ang Kasarinlan.
In September 14, 1998, ABS-CBN Sky Patrol, the first ever news chopper in the country, was launched. Anchored by Ricky Velasco, Sky Patrol changed the way of delivering and gathering news. ABS-CBN Sky Patrol is the news chopper of DZMM, ABS-CBN and ABS-CBN News Channel.
The station’s Iwas Dagdag-Bawas and Oplan MM ‘98 campaigns were cited as Outstanding Public Service Messages by the prestigious AdBoard Araw Values Awards 1998, besting more than 100 entries from different advertising companies and broadcast networks.
In February 2001, the last episodes of ‘Kabayan (Kapangyarihan ng Mamamayan, Balita at Talakayan) aired. At the time, it was DZMM’s top-rating radio program anchored by Noli de Castro. The show had to end its run in order to allow de Castro to run for the Senate.
Also in 2001, DZMM celebrated its 15th anniversary of broadcasting on-air with its richly deserved tagline, “Una sa Balita, Una sa Public Service”. It was also on the same year when the station tapped the power of text messaging with DZMM TxtPatrol. This technology enabled the listeners to voice out their concerns faster and easier.
DZMM’s trademark drama theatre aired weekday afternoons, changing the way people perceived radio drama. The drama theatre featured the real life-stories of DZMM anchors like Bro. Jun Banaag, Joey Galvez, Sen. Alfredo Lim, and other personalities. It was also on the same year when Sports Talk was launched. This jam-packed sports-oriented program won CMMA’s Best Sports Program on its first year of airing.
In 2005, listeners’ first heard the DZMM theme. It was composed by Jessie Lasaten, with words of Bing Palao, Robert Labayen, and Peter Musngi (now ABS-CBN’s Vice President for Radio), and sang by Reuben Laurente, a former member of the music group The Company.
On February 7, 2006, SikaPinoy was conferred with the Anvil Award of Merit by the celebrated Anvil Awards of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP).
It was also in 2006 when DZMM celebrated its 20th Anniversary in Araneta Coliseum with a bang- dubbed as Happy 20 DZMM. The theme of DZMM was given a different twist with the Megastar- Sharon Cuneta singing the anthem.
In 2007, DZMM continued to be the most awarded radio station in the Philippines after reaping awards from the different award-giving bodies in the country and even abroad.
In October 25, 2007, DZMM won three awards in the 29th Catholic Mass Media Awards. It included Best News Program for Radyo Patrol Balita Alas Onse Y Medya, Best Radio Drama for Maala-ala Mo Kaya sa DZMM and Best Business Program for Radyo Negosyo.
DZMM is proud to won in the Best News for Radio in the 2007 Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Prizes held in Tehran. Radyo Patrol Balita Alas Onse Y Medya bested more than 50 entries worldwide including Hong Kong’s RTHK, China’s RTPRC/CNR, and Singapore’s MediaCorp Radio.
Bago Yan Ah, the science-based program hosted by Angelo Palmones during Saturdays at 4pm is also a finalist in the 2007 ABU Prizes for the Best Infotainment category.
DZMM top the 16th KBP Golden Dove Awards held in Clark, Pampanga in November 16, 2007. The station won 10 awards, especially the Best AM Station for the year. Other awards include; Best Radio Variety Program for Todo-todo Walang Preno, Best Radio Program for Maala-ala Mo Kaya, Best Radio Public Service Program for Radyo Negosyo, and Best Science and Technology Program for Bago Yan ‘Ah.
Armel Fernandez won the KBP Award for Best Radio Field Reporter, Ariel Ureta for Best Radio Variety Program Host, Korina Sanchez for Best Radio Public Affairs Program Host and Angelo Palmones for Best Science and Technology Journalist.
The stations plug for Martial Law had also won the Golden Dove for Best Public Service Announcement.
Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Manila honored DZMM as the Radio Station of the Year for its balanced news and quality programming.
On December 11, 2007 , six DZMM anchors had been conferred with the Anak TV Seal as Most Admired Male and Female Personalities. They include Julius Babao, Ted Failon, Korina Sanchez, Christine Bersola, Karen Davila and Bernadette Sembrano.
The 3rd Jose G. Burgos Jr. Awards for Biotech Journalism had given Angelo Palmones, DZMM station manager a special citation during the awarding ceremonies at the Balai Kalinaw in University of the Philippines Diliman on November 29, 2007.
The Biotechnology for Life Media and Advocacy Resource Center (BMARC) recognized Palmones for his outstanding and consistent commitment in popularizing biotechnology.
DZMM had also reaped two awards in the 2007 PopDev Media Awards held at the Traders Hotel, Pasay City in December. PAKSA’s “Populasyon Sa Pilipinas Paano Ito Makokontrol,” won the Best Radio Production for Broadcast Category, while TJ Correa’s (DZMM Researcher) special report, “Populasyong Mabilis ang Paglobo, Ano nga ba ang Benepisyo at Sakripisyo?” had been a runner-up.
The PopDev Awards pays accolade to tri-media practitioners who have made and produced special reports about population and development. It is undertaken by the Philippine Legislators’ Committee and the United Nations Population Fund through its 6th Country Programme.
DZMM started the year with a bang after bagging all the awards for AM radio category in the Second Gandingan 2008: UPLB Isko’t Iska’s Broadcast Choice Awards held on January 19, 2008 at the DL Umali Auditorium in UP Los Baños in Laguna.
DZMM received the Best AM Station and the special award for being the Most Development- Oriented Radio Station in the country.
Tambalang Failon at Sanchez was hailed as the Best AM Program and Korina Sanchez as the Best AM Announcer.
Gandingan 2008 is conducted by the UP Community Broadcasters’ Society in UPLB..
DZMM Radyo Patrol 630 recently bagged the silver prize in the prestigious New York Festivals for Radio Broadcasting. The awards night took place last June 19 at the Tribeca Rooftop in New York City. ABS-CBN’s radio station won in the Breaking News Story category (Longform) for its special coverage of the Manila hostage drama
